Physical activity and weight status of children in Germany: cross-sectional results from the MoMo Wave 3 (2018–2020)

Brehm, E., Tschuschke, L., Klos, L., Burchartz, A., Volk, C., Hanssen-Doose, A., Jekauc, D., Niessner, C. & Woll, A. (2025). Physical activity and weight status of children in Germany: cross-sectional results from the MoMo Wave 3 (2018–2020). European Journal of Pediatrics, 2025(184).

Abstract
Childhood physical activity (PA) plays a critical role in preventing obesity and supporting overall health. This study investigates the prevalence of weight status categories and their association with organized and unorganized PA among 6- to 17-year-old children in Germany using MoMo Wave 3 (2018–2020). Cross-sectional data from MoMo Wave 3 (2018–2020) were analyzed to examine associations between weight status and PA. A total of 1983 participants (age: 11.6 ± 3.4 years, 52.3% male) completed a questionnaire and had anthropometric measurements taken, including height and weight. Statistical comparisons between normal-weight children and those classified as underweight or overweight based on their body mass index focused on their participation in organized and unorganized PA. Linear and logistic regressions were used for statistical analysis. Among the participants, 3.0% were severely underweight, 5.8% were underweight, 7.2% were overweight, and 4.6% were obese. Participants classified as underweight (ꞵ = − .084; p < .001) and overweight (ꞵ = − .045; p = .042) spent less time in organized PA compared to normal weights. Overweight participants were less likely to participate in unorganized PA (OR = .64, p = .003). No significant differences were observed in the duration of unorganized PA among those who participated, regardless of weight status.

Conclusion: The prevalence of overweight and obesity has remained consistently high in recent years. Tailored interventions should address the specific barriers faced by both underweight and overweight children to enhance their participation in PA and improve health outcomes across diverse groups.

Remote assessment of physical fitness via videoconferencing: a systematic review

Klein, T., Worth, A., Niessner, C. & Hanssen-Doose, A. (2025). Remote assessment of physical fitness via videoconferencing: a systematic review. BMC Sports Science, Medicine and Rehabilitation, 17(11).

Abstract
Physical fitness is a critical marker of overall health across all age groups, influencing longevity and quality of life. This systematic review assessed the use of remote physical fitness assessments, a crucial adaptation during the COVID-19 pandemic that broadened access to health monitoring outside traditional settings. The review included 35 studies, covering various age groups and health conditions, and evaluated 48 physical fitness tests across eight physical fitness components. Balance, muscular strength, and endurance were the most frequently assessed, with tests like the 30-second sit-to-stand (30s-STS) showing strong validity, reliability, and feasibility for remote use. However, the study population was mainly adults and older adults, with nearly no focus on children, revealing a significant gap in research for younger populations. Additionally, the review identified gaps in assessing components such as body composition, reaction time, and agility, which are crucial for a comprehensive assessment of physical fitness. These gaps underscore the need for further research and development of reliable and valid remote assessment tools. The findings of this review emphasize the importance of standardizing remote physical fitness assessments to ensure their validity, reliability, and feasibility making them effective tools for health monitoring across diverse populations and settings.
